Exploring Learning Technologies Workshop Series

Engage with Social Software (ELT1)

Abstract
Recent years saw an explosive development of technologies enabling easy group collaboration focusing on creating and sharing participatory media: blogs, wikis, podcasting, vodcasting, etc (often described as Social Software). This holds an unprecedented potential for lecturers and students to engage in learning activities using “read & write web” tools. This series of workshops will introduce a variety of pedagogically sound tools and explore strategies of using them to enhance students’ engagement in learning and development of students’ reflective practices.

Tools: Blogs, RSS, Instant Messaging, Flickr, Wikis, Podcasting, Geotagging, Moodle, ePortfolios.

The workshop comprises 3 sessions and are offered in March, July and November

Digital Video enables lecturers to address a variety of learning needs of students with multiple learning styles. This workshop series will look into educational use of Digital Video and will explore the process of Digital Video production: from pre-production (scripting, storyboarding, planning) to production (camera work), post-production (editing, compression) and delivery (video sharing websites, DVD, etc)

Tools: iMovie, iDVD, Final Cut Pro (Macintosh), Pinnacle Studio (Windows), Compressor

The workshop comprises 3 sessions in April using Macintosh computers and is repeated in June for Windows PCs

Visual Media Essentials (ELT4)

Abstract
Digital literacy encompasses more than reading and writing text on screen. Recent educational research indicates changing expectations for literacy at digital age: the focus of the younger generation is increasingly skewed towards visual media. This workshop series will look into different approaches of using visual media for teaching and learning and offer an opportunity to explore visual media creation hands-on: from simple image editing to sharing, distribution and embedding visual media in different contexts (from simple web pages to “geotagging”!). A picture is worth a thousand words.

Tools: Adobe Photoshop, MM Fireworks, MM Flash, MM Freehand, Flickr, geotagging

Flying Start with Interactive Media (ELT5)

Abstract
Different Interactive Media applications are becoming more and more ubiquitous in our everyday life: operating an interactive DVD interface, playing computer games, using an ATM, - we don’t give it a second thought. Interactive Media easily lends itself to educational purposes as well. In this workshop series we will be exploring educational use of interactive learning objects and will be creating simple animations and simulations, interactive movies or simple DVD interfaces, depending on the needs and interests of the participants.

Tools: MM Flash, eZediaQTI, iDVD, QTVR

A Step Ahead with Mobile (ELT6)

Abstract
At this day and age most of the youngsters rely on their mobile phones as the ultimate multimedia devices. Maintaining social networks, taking and sharing images or videos, listening to audio while on the go, is easy with a mobile phone. As the Unitec wireless network coverage increases, why not explore the opportunities for learning using mobile devices? Recent educational research points out countless advantages of mobile and wireless computing in education: ubiquity, portability, flexibility for collaborative learning projects, etc. This workshop series will explore the educational potential of mobile devices and will enable the participants to try some of the mobile approaches hands-on.

Tools: SMS, downloadable Java applications, mobile web2 services, Moodle

Web Authoring Primer (ELT7)

Abstract
The ability to understand how the Internet works and how to put content online has become an essential skill to be mastered in the digital era. This workshop will offer a quick start to web authoring: creating and linking web pages, inserting images and other media, designing the web page layouts, and just a glimpse of HTML code. Web Authoring skills are very transferable: depending on the participants interests and needs, they will be able to customise their study materials in Blackboard courses, create tailor-made website layouts or integrate different types of media in their web pages.

Tools: MM Dreamweaver, MM Fireworks, HTML

Abstract
BUG brings together Unitec’s community of people who are interested or are already using educational technologies. It is the avenue to share the latest findings, surprises and matters arising related to the use of Blackboard and other educational technologies at Unitec. Each meeting features one or two examples of good teaching practices using technologies from Unitec community (or by invited speakers). We hope BUG will encourage collaborations leading to new projects across and outside Unitec. Each workshop’s agenda will be driven by the interests and needs of the participants.
